Life of an Aegonian: Turning employee insight into action

March 30, 2026The Aegis Companies

Life of an Aegonian (LOA) is Aegis’ annual retreat that ensures employee insight continues to shape decisions as the company grows. As organizations scale, distance can form between leadership and employees, and between ideas and decisions.  Aegis created LOA to reduce the gap between good ideas and their effective implementation as it expanded.

At Aegis, listening to our team is not a symbolic value, but part of our DNA.  It informs how the company operates, how our team is doing, and the direction our company should take. The people doing the front-line work hold insights that strengthen the organization, sharpen decision-making, and improve client services and relationships. LOA brings employees and executives together away from the office, blending strategy sessions with shared experiences that strengthen relationships.

The retreat’s impact demonstrates how employee-driven ideas move from conversation to action, influencing operations, culture, and service delivery as Aegis grows.

“At the first LOA I was the youngest and most junior person in the company, yet I felt equal to everyone in the room. I could share my perspective on how we should improve, and I genuinely felt empowered.” – Kyle MacDonald, Chief Financial Officer

How LOA started and why it stuck

In Aegis’ early years, feedback flowed naturally because leadership worked directly within our operations teams. CEO David Hatwell and other leaders worked daily on schedules, risk management, and client challenges, with firsthand knowledge of operational pain points. As Aegis grew, Dave recognized that informal conversations alone could no longer surface emerging challenges or new ideas. He introduced a deliberate approach connecting employee feedback to company decisions. The first gatherings were informal dinners with no agenda or presentations. Employees spoke candidly about what it meant to work at Aegis and where the company could improve, sharing insights ranging from work-life balance to field operations.

“Eyeball-to-eyeball conversation is when you really see sincerity in people. We are encouraged to follow tangents and keep digging. People add context, challenge assumptions, and build on each other’s thinking.”- Robert Plunkett, President, Planning and Scheduling

Participants felt a genuine sense of ownership of the discussion, and leadership left with clear priorities. What began as a casual dinner evolved into a structured off-site event, with a larger and more diverse group, formal agendas, and entertainment between sessions. Unique destinations, paired with dinners and social activities, helped lower guardrails and encourage openness among attendees. Dave dubbed these retreats “Life of an Aegonian,” signaling the company’s commitment to improving the employee experience.

Even as Aegis expanded, leadership preserved its commitment to team feedback and employee-driven innovation. LOA became more organized to ensure representation across roles, teams, and tenure levels. It became an annual referendum on whether we still live by our core values: that people are Aegis’ greatest asset and that listening leads to smarter decisions.

“Some of the best ideas come from unexpected places. LOA gives those ideas a place to be heard.”- Amin Azizi, Senior Director, Dispute Resolution

How LOA drives decisions

LOA creates a direct path between insight and action. Bringing employees and executives into the same room shortens the distance between those with day-to-day operational responsibilities and senior leaders in more strategic management roles. Ideas are discussed, clarified, and evaluated in real time with full context.

That accessibility matters because, in many organizations, ideas lose clarity as they move through layers of management. At LOA, these ideas are presented to everyone simultaneously. Attendees engage directly with ideas submitted by all employees, ask questions, and assess feasibility.  After the retreat, approved ideas are assigned executive champions and put into practice.

The outcome for Aegis has been sustained improvement across policy, operations, and service innovation. Over time, LOA discussions have informed updates to benefits, parental leave, and PTO structure. They have shaped internal systems, project setup processes, and support for on-site teams. In some cases, conversations have led to new service offerings, including cloud hosting and client training.

We realized we were already supporting project schedules with software expertise. The question became, ‘If we already deliver this capability, why limit the market?’ That conversation expanded our service offerings.” -Kyle MacDonald, Chief Financial Officer

This responsiveness benefits both employees and clients. Employees see their ideas implemented, building trust and engagement. Clients benefit from a company that makes decisions efficiently, adapts quickly, and improves by listening to the professionals closest to the work.

Future-proofing Aegis

LOA reflects Aegis’ belief that success is driven by clear insight from the professionals executing the work. As the company expands, it ensures innovation does not depend on hierarchy or proximity to headquarters.

By bringing together professionals from multiple offices and disciplines, LOA provides focused time in a relaxed setting to discuss ideas, identify pressure points, and examine policy implications. Aegis is a more forward-thinking, proactive organization as a result. New ideas for how we approach projects are introduced and implemented efficiently, benefiting our clients.

LOA has evolved from informal dinners into thoughtfully organized, fun-filled gatherings held in venues such as Vermont, South Carolina, and Puerto Rico. These settings remove participants from daily work demands, allowing them to focus on long-term priorities and cross-functional challenges. Whether in business attire during structured sessions or in flip-flops on the beach, the balance is intentional. LOA provides space for high-level strategic work while reinforcing that enjoying the process is part of its culture.

As Aegis enters its next 20 years, new markets, technologies, and client expectations will bring greater complexity. LOA helps ensure that growth does not dilute the company’s ability to identify and implement needed changes, embodying a broader truth: performance improves when insight flows freely from ideation to strategy. That commitment defines how Aegis listens, leads, and delivers.

“LOA is a unique and remarkable program. No matter your level, you get a direct audience, straight to the CEO, who puts himself in a position to receive your feedback and ensure the company acts on it.” – Russ Wodiska, President, National Operations
