ASAMW and Aegis: Empowering subcontractors through education

For nearly three decades, the American Subcontractors Association of Metro Washington (ASAMW) has dedicated itself to empowering subcontractors through its annual Project Manager Workshop. Rooted in ASA’s motto, “Better Construction Through Fair Construction,” the Project Manager Workshop equips up-and-coming talent with the practical knowledge and tools necessary to navigate the complexities of project management.
This workshop has become a cornerstone event for assistant project managers and emerging talent looking to enhance their construction management skills and become effective partners with general contractors. At the Aegis Companies, we are driven by our core belief that project controls are required for construction success. This deeply held value is why we provide essential construction planning and scheduling training as part of the ASAMW workshop.
Ike Casey, ASAMW’s Executive Director, emphasizes the importance of this initiative: “Our goal is to empower subcontractors with this workshop by educating them on all aspects of project management and giving them the tools they need to be equal partners with general contractors, leading to more efficient and successful construction projects.”

Aegis steadfastly supports ASAMW’s mission, contributing to the workshop by teaching the planning and scheduling portion for the past five years. Mid-Atlantic region president Russell Wodiska said, “Trainings like these increase awareness of project controls’ influence on construction success. We know subcontractor familiarity with scheduling fundamentals will positively influence project outcomes, and we are dedicated to sharing our expertise.”
Aegis’s training sessions focus on explaining the basics of these essential skills, ensuring that participants understand how construction project schedules are developed and maintained. One of the key components of Aegis’s training is the emphasis on Critical Path Management (CPM). This concept is vital for subcontractors to understand how changes to the project schedule can impact their day-to-day responsibilities and overall workflow on-site. By sharing its expertise on CPM scheduling, Aegis helps subcontractors anticipate and adapt to schedule changes, enhancing their ability to contribute to project decisions.
Moreover, this training fosters a collaborative environment between subcontractors and general contractors. When subcontractors are well-versed in scheduling, they can actively participate in discussions about how changes to the schedule affect their scope and timing, improving communication and ensuring that all parties are aligned to achieve profitable project execution.
Through their joint efforts, ASAMW and Aegis have created a platform that empowers subcontractors to be equal partners with general contractors on-site. This collaboration paves the way for better construction through fair construction, ensuring that the next generation of project managers is well-equipped with scheduling fundamentals to succeed.
