Aegis is pleased to announce the addition of a new team member.
Raza (meaning “Hope”) has the distinction of being both a living white rhinoceros calf and our new art installation, greeting visitors at the entrance of our headquarters in Silver Spring, Maryland. This bronze sculpture, weighing over 220 pounds and standing nearly 4 feet tall, symbolizes the strength and beauty of rhinos, especially those affected by poaching.
The real Raza faced overwhelming odds for survival. He was abandoned and orphaned before being rescued by conservationists. Since then, he relocated to a sanctuary where he has thrived, symbolizing hope and recovery for many lost rhino calves. After learning about Raza’s journey, artists Gillie and Marc spent six months sculpting him with the intention of raising awareness about the impacts of poaching.
This statue has traveled worldwide, with installations in New York City, London, Amsterdam, Cape Town, Sydney, and finally, here at Aegis. Each exhibition has played a crucial role in spreading the message about the devastating effects of poaching and the urgent need for conservation efforts.
To celebrate Raza’s new home at Aegis, we have donated $20,000 to Love the Last, a movement driven by public art to raise awareness, funds, and support for endangered species. Partnering with rhino-focused organizations like Ol Pejeta Conservancy, this campaign encourages people to take action before these animals are lost forever. This donation helps protect rhinos and other endangered species. Over the last decade, more than 8000 African rhinos have been lost to poaching, including more than 400 last year.
At Aegis, we view the rhino as a symbol of our leadership qualities in construction project controls. Like the rhino, we tackle challenges head-on and work hard to get the job done right, even when it’s tough. Our motto is: “Be the Rhino.” We invite everyone to learn more about Raza’s story and join us in advocating for a future where the mighty rhino population’s legacy is ensured for the admiration of all future generations.
